We had seen some trailers for this movie, the most memorable being the one where the main characters take a visit to the DMV run by sloths. It looked like it should be a fun time with cute characters, so we grabbed our 3D glasses and checked it out.
Official film synopsis:
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.
Zootopia is a fun movie with jokes geared towards kids and adults. It has a good pace, never really slows down and never skips through any plot lines, and does a good job of keeping the viewer engaged.
The Disney folks have once again delivered on matching characters and voices to what the viewer would imagine them to be. The fox is a smooth talking con-artist, the mayor is a lion, and the part of DMV employees are expertly played by sloths. They also do a great job of bringing to life what most would think of when they imagine a city where its inhabitants are a melting pot of animals from all over the world.
The overtones of the dangers of stereotyping are noticeable but not overbearing. Some of the panoramic scenes look really good in 3D but I don't think the viewer is missing out by seeing it in 2D.
This movie is best for: experiencing the beautiful 3D landscapes
